Running Accomplishments:

- I did better than I hoped my first year of XC. Really I didn't know what to expect and looking back I'm proud of myself for reaching the level I did sophomore year.

-I broke five in the mile @ the Davis Invite Sophomore year

Freshman Year: I didn't run cross country because I didn't really know about it until well into the school year:( In track the first ever mile I ran at practice was a 7:13 (HA!) and I ended the season with a 5:38 PR. I really only ran the mile that year.

Sophomore Year: I started running XC with the first summer workouts. I built up mileage all summer and progressively got better. Once the season came in I PR'ed almost every race. I ended the season with a 17:27 at regions, which means I was splitting at about  5:48 miles, only ten seconds slower than my PR in the mile freshman year. I also got the Rookie of the Year award, along with Dakota. Track season, well, was track season. A lot of lovely drama and confusion but hopefully that is all over for next year because I really want to focus on being a competitor in my Region and at State. I ended the season with a 4:58 PR.

Junior Year: I had an awesome XC season. I built mileage all though the summer and pushed myself through the season. I was doing well, until my shins just got to painful to run through, and unfortunately that was the pretty much the end of my season. I took time off before Region and ran as hard as I could finishing 10. Once State came around, I decided that I would pull out of the race to give another one of our guys a shot at running. Right after State, I began cross training, and I cross trained all throughout the winter, until I got back to running about two weeks before indoor started. I struggled a bit during indoor to manage my shins, but I followed my training, got stronger, and strengthened myself enough where my shins no longer even bothered me. I was able to go through the entire outdoor season without injury and climbed to mileage I had never achieved. I was second in the 2 mile at Region and made State, where I PR'ed again. I couldn't be happier with my outdoor season because although I didn't quite reach the times I could have hoped for, I stayed 100% injury free and I can tell that I am stronger and ready to take on a summer of hard training.

Senior Year: I trained hard and consistently this summer, climbing to 100 mile weeks, and feeling strong while doing so. I stayed at high mileage all through the season, averaging 90 miles a week, and racing hard all the while. When it came time to taper, I saw just how much all those miles paid off, and  now I'm proud to say I'm a Region Champion, as well as top 10 in the state.I trained hard and consistently this summer, and it payed off. I am a different runner now than I was a year ago, staying completely away from injury, giving me confidence that my body can take all the hard training that is coming up. I trained hard and went into Footlocker excited, but I did not do nearly as well as I could have. But, my failure at Footlocker fueled me for the season, and I set some PR's during Indoor. My real step up though, was during outdoor. I improved all season, with some great highlights along the way. I ran well at Arcadia, racing three times and PR'ing by almost 40 seconds in a 3200 after having raced twice previously. I continued improving and working hard, and at the Davis Invite I finished third with a 4:14 1600. I then went on to finish 5th at State in the 1600, and 3rd in the 3200, a big improvement over my 10th place finish during Cross.  Despite knowing that I could have done better this year, I am very satisfied with how my season went. I made a big jump through hard work, and I learned so much about running and about myself. Now, I am proud to say that I have signed to BYU and will be running for one of the best teams in the NCAA! Go Cougars!

AM: I missed my lift on Monday since I went to dinner with the recruits, so I went in this morning before my run to make it up. Still sore from Tuesday.

PM: I showed up at 3 to run, and the only other person there was Tracy, so we went for a run. We did Carterville, but then cut over to the the River trail before we passed the light by Canyon Rock Elemntary. Then we headed back the usual River trail route, for an easy 4 miles. That is a good 4 mile route.

Afterwards I went into the training room, and Sarah did this weird thing with my legs when I was lying down on my back, and she told me to squeeze my knees together, then all of a sudden she jolted them open. I heard a pop, and she told me that was my hips falling back into place. I'm excited to go for my run tomorrow and see if it has helped at all! + I'm super sore still from weights.

AM: Woke up this morning feeling less sore than yesterday, but for some reason more stiff. It was just below freezing, but it was nice, cold morning.  Just went for out and back up the canyon. I loosened up a bit as I went on, but never really that much. Despite that, it was a great run, because the hip readjustment that Sarah did on me yesterday really worked! But I think it's only the right hip that popped or moved, because my right hammy was significantly less achy and stiff than my left one. In fact, my entire right leg was feeling about three times as good as my left. Yay, progress! So now, I am going to keep getting my hip adjusted before runs and hopefully I can get them to be even in no time!

AM: Came up to SL for the day, once I got to my parents house, I went for an easy run. I have another week of 'off' so I just went for a quick four miles around the neighborhood.

PM: Pretty cold today! I found Sarah right before the run and she did the hip thing she has been doing, and this time I felt a pop more on the left side :) Then I went for a run with the guys, and my left was feeling on par with the right! I went out three miles with them on the river trail, and then headed back on my own. Once I got back, I had Jeun do the hip thing again, and then I stretched and then went over to the osilation pedastal and stretched my hammys/abductors/butt on that, which really seems to help, and then went over and took a 15 minute ice bath. Hopefully after this week it will feel good enough to go back to training on!

PM: After getting my hip worked on, I ran with all the guys on the river trail towards the lake loop, then the traveling guys went off to do their workout, and the rest of us kept going. I turned at 4 with Nick and Blake. We headed back at an easy pace. My hip fatigue is feeling a little better every day!

After the run I stretcehd a bit in the training room, then went to weights. We are starting to add more weight to all of our reps, so I was dead after weights. I got some good stretches and exercises from Brandon to open up my hips and strengthen them.

After weights I stretched in the training room, then took a 15 minute ice bath.

PM: Went for a un with the guys at 3. We did Carterville, I went out 4 miles with them, then headed back to the locker room on my own. I went into the training room and stretched, but didn't ice bath. I probably should have, but I was pressed for time.

PM: Met all the guys doing a workout at intramural field. We ran over there, then I did laps around the fields while the guys did the workouts. I did a couple laps with Tracy, Rohat, and Sork. Then I headed back and then after a little bit of stretching in the training room, went to weights. I was in there by myself today since the other guys are doing totally different lifts and the guys in my group are doing the time trial tomorrow. It was a tough day in the weight room again. After, I went to the training room, stretched, and took a 15 minute ice bath.

PM: Met with the guys at 2 to get in the run before the time trial. We ran on the River Trail. It was absolutely perfect weather otuside, I even ran shirtless! But, a draw back to the warm weather was all the gnats on the trail :/ Nick and I went out 3 miles with the rest of the guys going out 5, while dodging the bugs. We headed back at a nice, relaxed pace. My hips were feeling pretty tight and my upper hamstrings were really fatigued. Probably due to the fact that I haven't had my hips popped in several days. After the run, we watched the time trail, then I ran back to the locker room with Natalie. I stretched in the training room, got my hips adjusted, heard a nice, loud POP, then took a 15 minute ice bath. HopefullyI feel good on the run tomorrow!

I have a favor to ask my fellow bloggers. Please read and share this story on your blog or on facebook. Jared Ward is an amazing runner, and he was robbed of his 4th and final year running for BYU over a stupid technicality. The 'big' sports are granted amnesty by the NCAA even when they don't deserve it, but runners are pushed around because there is no media surrounding us. Let's get the NCAA to listen.

AM: Met some guys at 9 am to run. Of course they were all doing long runs, but I was just doing 6 to round out miles. We ran up the canyon, and I turned at 3 and headed back. I was really feeling the hip/hamstring fatige on this run. I was making progress at the beginning of the week, but I feel like now it's is bad as ever. Sort of frustrated right now because I don't know wha the real cause of my problem is.

PM: Ran at 3 with the rest of the traveling guys. They did a short workout at intramurals, so I just ran around during their workout, then went for a cool down on the river trail from intramurals with a bunch of the guys. Hit 7 back at the locker room.

After the run, I went to weights. I am going to take it easier on the squats since they tend to make me sore in the abductor area, and I feel like I confuse that with the actual pain. But got in a got upper body workout.

Stretched on the oscillation pedastal, then took a 15 minute ice bath after.

PM: I went in and talked with Judd for awhile before the run, he gave me some good exercises to do three times a week to strengthen the core/hip area, then made an appointment with the doctor for later that day. I did the set of exercises Judd gave me right before the run, they take about 20 minutes. Then right before the run, Judd popped my hip.

I met the guys for the run. We just did Carterville at an easy pace. We got stopped by the Fox News car along our run. They were looking for Jared so they could interview him. They ended up filming us running for a little bit.

I got back just in time for the doctor's appointment. He said the my hips were pretty even, but that it could be a number of things bothering me. For now he perscribed me some Diclofenac (strongest non-steroidical antinflammatory out there), and said to take one pill in the morning and one at night for about two weeks. If it wasn't feeling any better after two weeks, that we'd take some X-Rays and go from there.

After seeing the doctor, I stretched a little in the training room, then took a 15 minute ice bath.

Coach and I decided to hold off on workouts still, but to bump up the miles a bit. So this week will be about 60.

PM: I got into the training room about an hour before the run and did my stretches, then got some DMS on my right hamstring since it was feeling tight. The doctor told me to keep the hamstrings and upper leg/hip area really loose. For the run, the guys were doing a really short workout, so I just went for a run with Nick. We did medum Carterville, then added some at the track while the guys did their workout, then back to the locker room.

I have to write an 8 page paper by tomorrow, so I skipped weights.

PM: I met a bunch of the guys not traveling for a run at 2. I was planning on doing 10 with the group, but the hip/pubic bone area was really fatigued today, so I just did medium Carterville instead. Nick, Trent, JZ, and I did medium Carterville. Once I finished, I stretched for a bit and then took a 15 minute ice bath. Crummy day for running, I was feeling a bit frustrated with the pain, but it will get better in due time. The Diclofenac also gave me a lingered stomach ache, so that added to my frustration. But, it was hard to stay upset today because earlier we found out the Jared Ward has been given his eligibility back! The news has stirred up the running scene, and all the other high ranked teams know what this means. I'm super excited to see what the guys will do at Nationals!

AM: Drove up to Ogden to watch Regionals! Got in 2 miles running around the course, and in between the races I got in a 4 mile run with Nick running on the course. Then after a delicious meal at the Perry's house, we drove back and I got went home. Once home I did an easy four miles around my neighborhood to get 10. The hips were pretty aggravated once I finished.

AM: I had originally planned to try and get a longer run today, but after how I felt yesterday, I just did the 6.5 miles I needed to hit an even number for the week. Hips are feeling pretty off right now, something must have aggravated them more than the usual amount. Sigh.

PM: Tried running on the alter G and seeing if that would help. No dice. Still felt the hip, just felt lighter than normal. I just hopped on it, and I didn't check the reserve sheet. Shea had signed up to use by the time I hit just over 2 miles, but she was nice enough to let me finish to an even 3 before I handed it over to her.

I finished up with another three miles to get 6 for the day.

PM: Went for a run with some of the middle distance guys. We were planning on doing Carterville, but once we hit four miles it started snowing/hailing with a headwind, so we just turned back and hit 8 at the locker room.

No updates really with my hip. At this point I can tell that it really just is my hips that aren't aligned right. Once the guys and coach get back from Nationals, I am going to see the miracle trainer.

PM: I went and saw Ron today. He really knows his stuff. He had diagnosed what my issue was pretty rapidly, and explained to Coach, Judd, and I what was wrong. I can't remember any of the medical terms he used, but basically he said that my left leg was longer than my right, and that my hips were out of line and I was 'locked up' at L5, which was why none of the BYU trainers attempts to adjust me worked. He said that I was compensating for all this stuff with my right leg, which was why I always felt the pain more on the right side. He also started guessing some pains I've had before I'd told him, like fatigue when I'm sitting and having to readjust myself. I finally got some explanations for the problems I've been having, and after he worked his magic, we headed back the SFH and I went for a run.

I did 3 out and back on Carterville. I felt a little off for this run, probably because of all the adjusting that Ron did, but as far as the pain, it was about 80 percent gone, which is really good. He said the result wouldn't be immediate, to give it a few days and to do the exercises he gave me, as well as stretching really well before runs like I've been doing. I'm optimistic - this is the first time in 5-6 weeks that I've felt less pain than the day before. Hopefully the progress continues!!

PM: All my classes got cancelled today except one, so I went to that one, and was done by 11. I ate some snack shack food, then got changed and did my stretches. I saw Danielle in there while she was stretching, so we decided to run together since neither of us had anyone to run with. She'd never done Eyestone loop before, so I showed her that run. We took the short loop back along the railroad tracks, then took 300 E back to the locker room. We hit 7.6 outside, so I added a bit to make it 8. We went slow but it was good since I am just barely trying to get back into it. After I did my exercises and then later hitched a ride with Danielle back up to SL for the break.

AM: Went for an easy run, but I felt horrible today. I must have slept wrong, maybe becaue I'm not used to my bed anymore. My back felt super tight and I just felt off. My breathing also felt restricted. I slowed the pace down several time, but even 7 minute pace hurt, so I just picked it back up to 6:20 since it hurt either way. I was planning on 10 but cut it short at 6.

AM: I tried to find a Turkey Trot, but every year the deadlines for them fall earlier, and there were only two which I could sign up for, both of which would cost $45+, which I didn't want to pay. I wanted to find a small, easy going one where I wouldn't be tempted to race, just where I could get in a good effort for the first time in 6 weeks. I don't expect an even remotely fast time since I haven't done workout in a month and a half.

Slept in and was still feeling a little off like I was yesterday. Ended up doing the same 6 miles I did yesterday, but slower. These past two days of running have been wierd. I might go for another run later tonight after dinner.

AM: Was going to meet Dakota for a run at Pipeline, but he ended up not being able to make it. So I just went for a run on Pipeline by myself. There were a ton of people with their dogs today, but they were all pretty good about moving out of the way, so I didn't mind. Started on the trail and realized I had to pee really bad, so I went up the switchbacks until I was in a dense enough part of the trees where I wouldn't be spotted, which was about a half mile up, then went back down. From there I just went out 3.5 on the trail and then back for a total of 8 miles. Beautiful day on the trail, surprisngly warm.

AM: I found a small, first year 5k called the Stache Dash, and it seemed like the good opportunity to get in a tempo effort. I warmed up two miles and change with Dakota, then once we got our bibs on, I put on my flats and headed over to the start. The race was on the wood chips, which I wasn't expecting.

I did not know what to expect from this race. I haven't done any workouts for 6 weeks, and I've been at around 40-45 miles per week for most of the time. My first mile was a 5:23, and I don't remember my two mile time, but I finished the race in 16:13. The race was really short of 5k, it was actually short of 3 miles, but I didn't really care. What was important to me was to get in a good effort and to just see where I was at.

Ugh. As I expected, I'm butt slow. But hey, no where to go but up!

Cooled down nearly two miles to hit 7.
